A Sewing Room in the Making!!!

I've been so excited that we are finally in the last phases of finishing the house which includes a new sewing room space for me! Not that I will have much time to use it with the new baby coming soon, but at least I will be ready for any chances I do get to sew. At least I think it will make our lives much more organized that I will not have to have my projects out on the kitchen table or in our bedroom anymore. About 6 months ago I had to clear out all of my sewing stuff out of the spare room as well as all my husband's office things so as to be able to move Alexander into his own room. It has made life chaotic for us as neither my husband or I have had a space to work in. But, this will finally change! This weekend we are going down to the coast to pick up furniture from his sister's storage place and he will start moving paperwork and things into his new office downstairs! I probably won't be able to move into my new sewing area for at least another month, but progress has been made as you can see in the photos...

Originally I had planned on having a desk in front of the window to look out while I sew and to build the shelving on the side. But, I didn't think the window would sit so low either before we started building, so at the last moment yesterday I asked the builder if he could build me this L-shaped desk configuration so I will have space to sew and cut without disturbing the window space. My plan now is to put a desk sideways on the other side of the window to help block off little people from entering my sewing area and to have more working space. I will put an ironing board along the left side wall and have a design wall above it. Anyone else have any ideas?

It's hard to understand in the photo, but the sewing room is actually located in the living room area of the new downstairs. The dividing wall had to be there for structural reasons having to do with the fact that the house was first put up on stilts before we actually started working on closing in the downstairs. At first I was annoyed with trying to come up with a layout for the downstairs until I realized that this extra space would be the perfect sewing area for me one day! It's great to see ideas coming to fruition.

The other photo is of my new fabric that I adore by one of my all time favorite designers, Urban Chiks. This one is called Dream On and is not due to come out until October! I managed to find a fat quarter bundle, though... Hee, hee. I have my ways, even all the way here in Australia! Do you love it? They seem to be vintage sheets reproductions, which I think is very clever of them. Good on you Urban Chiks! I wish we knew who you are! They don't seem to tell us much about themselves but design great fabric. Just in case you're wondering, they've also designed Moda's Summer in the City, Blossom, 1974, Sweet and Swell...

What a great sewing space! I love all the cubbies and your wall color is so pretty. I love that Dream On collection. You are sneaky with that FQ bundle! I'm a little jealous!

I would love a little sewing place like that! Good on you! :)

I also love the look of vintage sheets, but can't really bring myself to use "used" sheets for sewing. Yikes! How great to have such pretty "vintage sheet" fabric that is brand new! I'll be watching for it to come out.

I suggest good lighting especially under that wall of cubbies, do it now before it is too late. You are so lucky it looks great. Rolling bins and an art taboret for sewing supplies under the desk.

I love the room!! I'm glad you explained your desk move. When I looked at the picture I thought- why didn't she put her desk under the window? I agree with Peggy-- make sure you have some good lighting and add some artwork above your non-window wall-mini quilt or cool fabric over stretcher bars is what I love to do for easy art. Its hard to see how much room you have. I do so much work on the floor I wish I had a table or fold-down table to cut on and work on esp. because sitting on the floor hurts my back so much now- I know you understand that!!
I can't wait to see pics of the finished room & house (oh and yes I love those vintage sheet inspired fabrics!!)

I have my sewing table sitting in front of the window so my back is to the window - that way I get all the lovely light from it.
I love your shelves!
