AusMod Bee -- Lorena's Feather Blocks

Late last year Danielle and I started an Australian quilting bee called the AusMod Bee.  As international shipping prices keep increasing, we wanted to create a bee within Australia to cut down on shipping costs.  We wanted to get a group of inspiring Australian quilters together to make blocks together, chit chat and help create a stronger connection within modern style inspired Australian quilters.

January's queen bee started out with the talented Lorena who requested the Anna Maria Horner Feather block as her choice.  She did an amazing job organizing instructions, volunteering helping us to order plastic template sets if we wished from a local Australian business and supplied us with these gorgeous fabrics to make the blocks.  I have to admit, I am in love with this block design!  Anna Maria Horner is a genius!

Constructing this block was not terribly difficult, but the template set I now own definitely helped!  It really really helped me to make sure to cut all my outside edges on the grain line and to lay out the pieces on my design wall carefully before sewing.  I think if I didn't lay them out carefully beforehand, that it would be very easy to mix up where and at what angle each piece went.

I'm very very tempted to drop everything at once and make a Feather quilt for myself.  I must restrain myself as I have too many UFO's currently!

  1. I think it was a great idea to have your Aus bee. I'm spending a ridiculous amount on international shipping and I know lots of people are getting put off by high postage prices. Your feathers look great :)

  2. Beautiful feathers! Laying them out on my design wall would have saved a lot of unsewing... Whoops!

  7. gorgeous feathers Jeannette!! I would love a feather bed quilt now too, it's just such a gorgeous, effective block - so clever of AMH.

My bold plan at this early stage - is to make one block (from my own fabrics) of everyone's block each month - to keep, and eventually sew into an AusModBee quilt.

We'll see if that actually happens ... enjoy the rest of your weekend. Cx
