Well, this quilt is probably not the only quilt I will make for the My Precious Quilt Along. There has been a lot of cutting and sewing over the past couple of weeks, but I did manage to get this Mariner's Compass quilted up over the weekend. A bit of a special week for me this week (more on that later), but I have been indulging myself a bit with sewing and such! I used a lot of my most favorite fabrics in this quilt--Koseki floor plans, Mrs. March Retro Pop in teal, Joel Dewberry wood grain and of course Flea Market Fancy brown posies. The posies are on the back as well, so you can imagine how much fabric that used up!!
I used the Quilt Smart pattern method to make this quilt, which if you are not already familiar with these products they are made with printed fusible interfacing. Their techniques are so clever that this literally only took me one afternoon to sew the Mariner's compass part of the quilt.
My husband and I had a debate whether or not the brown posies were a good background fabric choice. He thought it wasn't Mariner--like enough. Yes, that is true, but the colors in the fabric worked in so perfectly--magically in fact. So, it was a happy accident to find as the light fades in the room towards nighttime the posies become less apparent and begin to look instead like stars twinkling in the night sky. Yay!!
I used an all over swirl quilting pattern to give it a "watery" look. I am quite happy with how this one turned out in the end!
Oh my! That is absolutely divine! The brown posies are perfect, and I love the binding color. That is one seriously gorgeous quilt.
ReplyDeleteHoly cow! That turned out amazing! I saw the pattern a few weeks ago on Pinterest. I love how you made this one.
ReplyDeleteThat is really Really lovely! Can a sewer that has never done foundation piecing use the Quilt Smart stuff? Is it really that easy - would you mind telling me the steps for the piecing - I am on the verge of ordering some, but at $20 postage, it needs to be gooood! Have you done other patterns - I'm almost thinking of the double wedding ring, cos I literally threw my traditional way blocks out!
ReplyDeleteJeanette - I have just re-read your previous posts - and all the other patterns you have been making using Quilt Smart - and! that you may be selling it here! I will hold off until it happens??!! Do you applique the already turned pieces onto a backing piece? If you do choose to stock, I will put my hand up for Wedding Ring and Hawaiian - always wanted to try the traditional Hawaiian style!
ReplyDeleteWow, that compass was HUGE! It looks fab, and hey, who cares about the lack of mariner-iness, you live on a farm, not by the sea ;o)
ReplyDeleteI have never thought I would like to make a mariner's compass but this makes me think, hmm? It is great and I really like the background print with it! The house print is one of my favorites anyhow since my husband is a builder ;-)
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness. It is spectacular. Love your quilt. Love!
ReplyDeleteI love how this came out it is just gorgeous. The brown posies are perfect!!
ReplyDeleteIt's just beautiful. I love the posies as the background fabric and the fact that they look like twinkling stars - bonus!

ReplyDeleteThat is definitely a good size if one is making a Mariner's Compass! I made one small one and it took a lot longer than an afternoon! =) Beautiful quilt.
